The Pastor's Corner
I know many of you have been watching Ken Burn's PBS series on World War II. My daughter asked me why I was watching a series on a topic that has been so thoroughly filmed and documented. I thought for a moment and said, "Maybe some of the people who fought in that brutal struggle are finally ready to tell their stories." It has always intrigued historians why the soldiers who endured such horror have mostly kept those experiences to themselves. Americans are known for emoting, maybe to excess. Why did this generation of men remain so reticent? Tom Brokaw in his mega-bestselling book "The Greatest Generation" seems to have gotten the survivors to start sharing their experiences. Burns work seems to have continued the effort to get vets to share the entries from journals they kept and letters they sent home. It makes for powerful testimony. It is almost too real for me to watch.
Director Ken Burns said in a television interview that he and his team were looking for "unmediated testimony told by soldiers and not by generals and actors." They were looking for the story from "the bottom up." The series is finding veterans at the end of their lives willing to say, "Here is what I experienced." This approach says Burns perhaps takes "some of the arrogance out of the American view of War. It is no longer the 'Good War' but the 'Necessary War ' in which over 60 million people were killed."
It has been said that wars accomplish one thing only - they eradicate something that is demonic.
World War II eliminated Fascism. In a major 2005 article in the journal "Foreign Affairs" it was suggested that maybe Americans have come to put too much faith in military might to solve problems. Instead of avoiding war unless forced to enter, we have come to see the use or threat of military force as a vehicle by which we push our values and accomplish our national goals. Perhaps, the author suggested, as the only superpower, the logical extension of the conviction that war is an acceptable instrument is the doctrine of pre-emption.
A substantial reason for the interest in "The War" is the current situation in Iraq. Who knows how long the war in Iraq will continue to drain our nations treasury, damage its reputation, and retard our abilities to address other pressing problems. Unlike World War II where the filmmakers carried the story until recently, the mistakes and miscalculation of this adventure are front and center already. We can only hope and pray that after it ends we will re-examine our current attitude towards war.
Please continue to pray for peace in Iraq.

Peacemaking Offering
"Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called the children of God" Matthew 5:9
The biblical vision of peace encompasses the justice and well-being that God intends for the world. God calls us to share the message of peace by seeking to heal brokenness, by working for justice and standing with those who are poor and oppressed. The Peacemaking Offering supports peacemaking ministries throughout the church. 25% remains in the local congregation, 25% supports presbytery and synod Peacemaking activities and 50% goes to the General Assembly. Your gift to the Peacemaking Offering is a way for you to make a difference in bearing witness to the reconciling gospel of Jesus Christ. It is particularly appropriate that the Peacemaking Offering is received on World Communion Sunday for in Communion we are united in Christ with our brothers and sisters around the world. There will be special envelopes in the bulletins for you to use.
